Significant weight loss from a higher BMI can bring meaningful health benefits. However, when weight reduction occurs relatively quickly — whether achieved through lifestyle changes, medical weight-management pathways, or other methods — some people notice unexpected changes in their facial appearance.

This is because as our overall body fat decreases, our natural facial fat pads that provide structure, volume, and support also reduce. This can lead to a hollower appearance around our cheeks or temples, more pronounced lines and folds, and reduced skin firmness or elasticity.

Understanding The Options

Every individual’s facial anatomy, skin quality, and goals are unique. At The Madison Medical Practice cosmetic skin clinics (Hornsby, Northbridge, and St Ives), Dr. Denise Huang and Dr. Zhixin Ning focus on a comprehensive clinical assessment to understand your specific concerns.

Depending on your individual assessment, management approaches may focus on:

  • Facial Structure & Volume Assessment: Clinical consultations to evaluate facial balance, structure, and contour changes.

  • Skin Firmness & Laxity: Non-surgical modalities, such as focused ultrasound technology (HIFU) using our Liftera 2 system, to support skin tightness.

  • Skin Texture & Quality: Treatments designed to support cellular health and skin conditioning, including microneedling, Rejuran and tailored skin-conditioning therapies.

Assessment and Consultation

There is no single approach that suits all. A comprehensive medical consultation allows the practitioners to assess your facial structure, evaluate skin quality, discuss potential risks and recovery times, and tailor an individualized management plan.

If you are achieving your weight-loss goals and would like to discuss changes in your skin or facial contours, please contact The Madison Medical Practice St Ives and book with Dr Zhixin Ning for an initial consultation.
