Free Nasal Spray Flu Vaccine Now Available at The Madison Medical Practice St Ives

Good news for local families this winter — NSW Health has expanded access to the free nasal spray flu vaccine, now available for all children and adolescents aged 2 to 17 years.

The nasal spray vaccine, known as FluMist®, provides a needle-free alternative to the traditional flu injection and helps protect children against influenza during the winter season.

A Simpler, Needle-Free Option

For many children, needles can feel stressful or overwhelming. The nasal spray flu vaccine is quick, gentle, and painless, making flu vaccination a more comfortable experience for both children and parents.

The vaccine is given as a simple spray into each nostril and is widely used internationally as a safe and effective way to reduce the risk of influenza.

Why Flu Vaccination Matters

Influenza is more than just a bad cold. Children can become seriously unwell and may also spread the virus to family members, classmates, and vulnerable individuals.

NSW experienced one of its most significant flu seasons in 2025, with high case numbers reported across the state. Health authorities continue to recommend annual flu vaccination for everyone aged 6 months and older.

Vaccinating children helps:

  • Reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalisation

  • Lower the spread of influenza in schools and households

  • Protect vulnerable members of the community during winter

Who Can Receive the Free Nasal Spray Vaccine?

Under the expanded NSW Health program, the free FluMist® nasal spray vaccine is available for:

  • Children and adolescents aged 2 to 17 years

The traditional flu injection remains available and may be recommended depending on individual medical history and clinical advice.
